Should I convert my iPhone photo to PNG or JPG?
Choose JPG if you're sharing or uploading the photo somewhere — smaller file, universally supported. Choose PNG if you're about to edit it in a design tool, place it in a document, or need a lossless format for further processing. For a typical photo you're just sending to someone, JPG is usually the better fit.
Is HEIC to PNG lossless?
The PNG itself is lossless — it stores every pixel of what it's given without further compression loss. But it can't undo any compression HEIC already applied when the photo was taken, so PNG isn't a way to recover detail; it just stops any further loss from this point on.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the HEIC?
HEIC uses HEVC video compression, which is extremely efficient for photos. PNG uses lossless compression built for flat graphics, not photographic detail, so a converted photo can easily end up three to five times larger as a PNG than it was as HEIC.
Does PNG keep transparency from a HEIC file?
HEIC photos from a camera don't have a transparency channel to begin with, so there's nothing to preserve — the PNG will simply be fully opaque, same as the source.
